13 Things You Need To Do If You’re Staying In York During The Holidays
The first of York’s notoriously short terms is over and the John Lewis advert has been out for ages, it’s time to do Christmassy things. If you’re going to be in York for some – or all – of the vacation and are looking for things to do, we’ve got you covered.
1. Go to a Christmas party on Hes East.
Who doesn’t love a Christmas party? Especially if your poorly heated student house isn’t feeling very festive. This starts at 7pm on the 15th December in Constantine Forum.
2. Make your own Christmas cards and decorate cookies.
Go from Constantine’s Christmas Party on the 15th to this cute crafts session in the same venue on the 16th. Show up at 2pm, drink some hot chocolate and make some gifts.
3. Watch a different film on campus every night for a week.
Spend some time in JJ’s Common Room (Halifax College) every night for a week, starting on the 18th. You can watch a different film every night with new friends, starting 7:30pm each evening.
4. Buy Christmas gifts at the Made in Yorkshire fair.
The Made in Yorkshire fair is the perfect place to get quality, unique Christmas gifts in York. Choose from a selection of bath products, artisan jewellery and earthenware pottery every day from now until the 20th December. It’ll be at The Guildhall near Betty’s and runs from 10am-5pm on each day.
5. Spend a day at Castle Howard.
Castle Howard is open daily until the 23rd December for Christmas. You can expect breathtaking interiors, live music, a market and a garden centre. Not to be missed.
6. Experience a Christmas service at the Minster.
For a more traditional Christmas activity go to the Minster and enjoy some hymns. There are services on the 22nd December at 7pm and the 24th December at 4pm.
7. Go to a Christmas Party for students with families.
Spend your Christmas Day afternoon on campus, in JJ’s Common Room (Halifax College). The party will run from 1pm til 4pm and is a great way to meet new people. For students with families only.
8. Actually get a seat in the library for once…and…study???
With deadlines and exams when we get back, this might be a good opportunity to use the library. There’s no chance you will be forced to sit on the floor AND there will be fewer people to judge you for taking library selfies.
9. Watch a live show.
Get immersed in this new, interactive experience of The Great Gatsby at The Fleeting Arms. There will be a Christmas special with champagne reception and canapés on the 23rd December, plus a NYE special. You can get tickets through York Theatre Royal.
10. Go to a New Year’s Eve Party on Hes West…
Countdown to midnight with friends in Wentworth Common Room (W/024). This party runs from 6pm ’til midnight.
11. Or go to a New Year’s Eve Party on Hes East.
Head to Constantine Forum at 9pm on the 31st for a big night!
12. Go out. Obvs.
Pretty much everywhere has something happening on NYE and there’s plenty going on in the run-up if you want to continue living the student life over the break. We know you know where they all are…
13. Go ice skating at Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland.
York’s Designer Outlet hosts the largest ice rink in the North, here until the 10th January. Get yourself a glass of mulled wine (probs after you ice skate…) and head to the fun fair.
