6 Lies You Were Told About Being an Adult
As you struggled through the traumas of adolescence your parents filled you with hopes and dreams about what adulthood would bring. Only now that you’ve graduated and adulthood has officially arrived, it’s clear that most of them were nothing but lies to keep you quiet while they watched Coronation Street.
How could they be so cruel?
1. “When you’re an adult, you can do whatever you want”
As you moaned about curfews and shutting your bedroom door, your parents told you that if you did well at school and left home, your freedom would be all yours. But this simply isn’t true. Yes, you may be able to pierce and tattoo your bodies as you please and stay out until 4am, but when you want to spend the day watching Netflix rather than go to work… your freedom is nowhere to be found.
2. “You can buy what you want”
Yep. Because everyone wants to buy electricity and water.
3. “You can eat as much junk food as you like”
Only now, you actually like vegetables and can’t afford cake. Typical.
4. “You’ll find out what you want to do with your life”
5. “It will all come together”
As you sit on your sofa after another job rejection, with no romantic life and a maxed-out overdraft, you fail to see how anything has “come together”.
6. “If you behave like a child, you’ll get treated like a child”
No matter how many times you call them at 3am weeping about taxes, petrol prices and your inability to wash clothes, they will only tell you they understand. They will not pay your bills or do your washing because apparently you’ll “never stand on your own two feet”.
Being an adult is just lame.
