20 Reasons Every Reading Student Should Be Looking Forward To First Term Starting
With just a week until move-in day, it’s pretty safe to say you’re eager for term to start and you’re not alone in that!
1. The fresh start you get with a new term
New term new you! If you’re a first year it’ll be a completely fresh start but if you’re a returner you’re probably excited to do it all over again after a summer being away from Reading.
2. Meeting new people
Inevitably you are going to make a new friend this year whether it’s for five minutes on a night out or a lifelong friend. University is a great opportunity to meet new people and everyone is super keen and friendly at the start of the year when deadlines haven’t killed their souls yet.
3. If you’re returning; catching up with friends you haven’t seen over the summer
A chance to get the old gang back together! And you won’t be nervous like you were in your first year, just stoked to be back getting to see those people you just never managed to catch up with during the summer.
4. Freshers Fortnight
You don’t have to be a first year to enjoy freshers! This is a time to cut loose before lectures and have a hangover without needing to move.
5. All the holidays like Halloween
And this year Halloween is on a Saturday! Just don’t be a lazy student and buy a white shirt from Primark then cover it with fake blood. Put some effort in this year!
6. Bonfire Night
A chance to get your friends together and watch some beautiful explosions in the sky… and probably get drunk because we are students.
7. And Christmas
8. Meaning festive drinks in Mondial
Fight off the cold with a Gingerbread Latte and all the other Christmassy drinks Starbucks in RUSU has to offer.
9. And Christmas socials
Societies normally end the term with a big Christmas party. These can range from meals out to parties on boats to nights out in Reading dressed as elves. Whatever it is it’s always fun.
10. Student Sessions
Every few months The Oracle offers a night with great student deals throughout. Good news for you, bad news for your bank account.
11. RAG Week
For those of you who don’t know RAG Week happens at universities up and down the country to help their chosen charities. This is a time to have fun and raise money.
12. Freshers Fayres
Whether you’re on a committee looking out for people to join you or a student looking for a new hobby, Freshers Fayre is the place to be! Go along and you might spot something you would have never dreamed of joining.
13. And that Dominoes is on campus at the fayres
Free pizza and discount codes you can use all year. Need I say more?
14. Tasters Sessions of Societies
After attending the fayre this is the chance to see what the societies you liked the look of are actually like. First term is a great time to make new friends and do new things and taster sessions are a great way to explore these societies without committing to something that’s not for you.
15. RUSU events like Comedy Nights
Last year RUSU has had some big names in comedy performing including Katherine Ryan and Shappi Khorsandi. In freshers week Ed Gamble, Suzi Ruffell, Larry Dean and Joel Dommett will take to the stage in Mojo’s for what promises to be a hilarious night.
16. A range of different acts at the Union
We have Phillip George, DJ EZ and Lethal Bizzle performing at different DANCE events in the union launching on the 9th of October. Wilkinson will also be making an appearance at RUSU Soundclash.
17. And other events in town
Including Basement Jaxx, Blackalicious and other incredible nights out.
18. A new season of films at Reading Film Theatre
A chance to see some movies you missed at the cinema for a cheaper price. Reading Film Theatre is back on the Tuesday 29th with Mad Max Fury Road.
19. Park Bar opening again
Even if you’ve spent your summer in Reading, Park Bar has been closed. Re-opening on the 17th students, will be able to enjoy cheap and convenient drinks and food right on campus again. Hurray!
20. Campus in Autumn
The campus is beautiful all year round but it is stunning in Autumn! Take time to explore and appreciate the beauty we get to see every day.
