University of Birmingham Students Will Soon Have Access To a Brand New City Centre Hub

Birmingham may not have the international appeal of London (yet), but there are many signs that the city is undergoing something of a renaissance. As new developments dot the skyline, it’s clear that Birmingham is shaking off its 70s reputation for concrete and ring roads and is now in the middle of a massive transformation. From the £188 million modernisation of the Library of Birmingham – now the biggest and most modern public library in Europe, in case you didn’t already know – to the extensive refurbishment of its railway stations, Birmingham is quickly becoming the place to be.

Following the city’s wide-scale renovation, the University of Birmingham now wants in and has already acquired a building on Centenary Square.

In an effort to branch out from its Edgbaston campus and create a major hub in the city centre, the University has recently acquired the Grade II listed Municipal Bank on Broad Street’s Centenary Square, just opposite the award-winning Library of Birmingham.

The building in question not only gives the Aston Webb a long awaited run for its money for most attractive piece of UoB architecture, it also has both the space and the style to facilitate the university’s ever-growing needs. Once a bank and currently used as an event space, the University plans to convert it into a hub for culture, education and general entertainment.

As well as expanding into the city, the University is also in the process of redeveloping its historic Edgbaston campus, building a brand new library, sport and fitness centre, and a new parkland that’s not due to be completed until 2019.

So while you’ll soon have every excuse to take full advantage of Birmingham’s city centre while you’re studying, you’ll still be able to enjoy the peace and quiet of the original UoB campus.

Which is the most beautiful UoB building?

  • Aston Webb
  • New Library
  • Barber Institute of Fine Arts
  • The Med School
  • Muirhead
  • Ashley Building
  • The Guild
  • Haworth Building
  • Law Building
  • Municipal Bank
  • None of the above.
