15 Things Every Aberystwyth Student Needs To Do Before They Leave

An Aberystwyth bucket list for all foodies and wanderlusters.

1. Feast at Sophie’s Breakfast.

Quite possibly the best breakfast in town (or Wales?!). It’s so good that people queue to just get a seat. It’s not often you hear customers agree to wait for half an hour to be seated in a little cafe. Top recommendation from me is the maple pancakes.

2. Go veggie for a day and try Crimson Rhino.

Support another local business by grabbing a smoothie or a haloumi burger from Crimson Rhino. They pride themselves on their ethical vegan and vegetarian menu, the decor inside is brilliant, and the staff are so nice!

3. Get on the stream train and head for Devil’s Bridge.

Take a packed lunch and make a day out of it. Don’t forget to take loads of pictures, otherwise it obviously didn’t happen.

4. Scarf down fish and chips on the beach.

Standard seaside tradition. Beware of the seagulls – they are beasts.

5. Have a BBQ on South Beach.

Almost a rite of passage for Aberystwyth students. Gather your chums, some disposable BBQs, and have a little party watching the sun go down. Just take your rubbish with you when you leave.

Happy bday Liv 💗

6. Check out the Castle Ruins.

Just up from South Beach are the castle ruins. This is also something that just seems to be an obligation for Aber students – you just have to go on a little adventure and explore all the hidey holes. It looks even better at night when it’s lit up, definitely the best time for that insta-worthy shot. (It’s also great for Pokemon go players)

7. Climb up Constitution Hill.

It’s definitely not for the faint-hearted! But it has great views and is perfect for a little graduation photoshoot, although you’ll probably want to take the tram up that day.

8. Eat an infamous “Glen Burger” at The Glengower.

This is one for the real foodies. Cheese and bacon galore, it’s one to really sink your teeth into. Pair it with a sunny day, cold beer, and a couple of friends, and you’ll have an amazing time.

9. Attempt the “Hulk Burger” challenge.

This is a real beast. Lord Beechings Tavern have set the bar high for this challenge: a 30 oz burger, chips, and a super sundae in a 1 hour time limit. Unfortunately, you don’t get your money – a whopping £19 – back if you complete the challenge, but you do get a t-shirt and your name on the wall of fame.

10. Snack on a Spartacus sandwich.

A cheap and possibly tastier version of Subway. Choose your fillings and sandwich style, and you’re away. I’ve often got on the train with a huge baguette and had many envious looks shot my way.

11. Be a part of our university sports team.

Whether you’re sporty or not, the events are great fun to try out, particularly Varsity, Rugby Sevens, and Superteams. Plus, varsity is being held in Aber this year so no excuses! Join in and get muddy or watch from the sidelines and cheer your mates on.

12. Go on an insane pub crawl.

What’s a uni town without its notorious pub routes and traditions? Try out Aber’s ultimate pub crawl, starting in Cambrian with a Death Star – or some other weird cocktail – and ending in Pier Pressure.

13. Play games at the arcade in Royal Pier.

It’s as terrible as you’d expect, but you just have to do it. Word has it, there’s even a new machine! You could always follow up with a beer on the pier to make the experience a little less seaside-cringe.

14. Go wave-watching.

By this I mean the big guys you get in stormy weather. Extra points if you post a video on Facebook and scare your family members. Usually though, it’s really peaceful to just sit down and watch the waves crashing.

15. And, of course, watch an Aberystwyth Sunset.

And post a picture on social media. I mean, if you don’t have at least 20 pictures of Aberystwyth on your phone, did you even really live here?
