15 Places Every Warwick Student Needs To Eat at This Year
As a Warwick University student, you will most likely spend your second and third year living in the lovely and rather pretentious Royal Leamington Spa. For a relatively small place, Leamington is bursting at the seams with independent cafés and restaurants. You’ll therefore definitely be needing this list of delicious places to enjoy a hungover Sunday brunch or a boozy mid-week meal.
1. Coffee Architects
Without a doubt, this place is the very pinnacle of brunching in Leamington Spa. As if that weren’t enough, they make some of the best cakes in the Midlands, and they have lots of gluten free and vegan cakes available too.
Best dish: Blueberry and Lemon Cake.
2. Basement Browns
This time last year, Basement Browns was the new kid on the block. It has now cemented its place amongst the best pizza places in Leamington. They offer cheap, but delicious individual pizzas that you can customise at no extra cost. They even make delicious Sicilian pastries like cannoli!
Best dish: Margherita individual pizza with free vegetable toppings.
3. La Coppola Ristorante
This restaurant doesn’t quite meet the ‘student budget’ requisite, but if your parents are visiting for the weekend, make sure you convince them to take you out to this authentic Italian restaurant. It’s worth going just for the décor.
Best dish: Go authentic and have any of their delicious meat or fish dishes.
4. The Steamhouse – Espresso & Bagels
Does what it says on the tin – great coffee and great New York style bagels.
Best dish: The Yankee Bagel – salt beef, pastrami, Swiss cheese, pickles and American mustard. Heaven. 🙌
Leamington Spa is truly blessed to have this amazing Indian restaurant. It specialises in South Indian cuisine which sets it apart from all the other Indian restaurants in Leamington. The chefs are born and bred in Kerala, so you know you’re getting truly authentic South Indian food here.
Best dish: You can’t go here without getting the Masala Dosa.
6. Bar Angeli
A sister restaurant of La Coppola, this is another great import from our Italian neighbours. Serving some of the best coffee in Leamington, they also offer a wide range of salads, antipasti, soup, paninis and cakes.
Best dish: Coffee. Just any of their coffees.
7. The Aviary Café
This café is located in a beautiful conservatory in the Jephson Gardens. It’s the perfect place to grab a coffee on an autumnal Sunday morning and stroll around the gardens to walk off your hangover. If you’re a South Leamington dweller, then it also means you don’t have to walk to the top of the Parade to get your caffeine kick.
Best dish: Spinach, feta and cherry tomato tart.
I know what you’re thinking – not ANOTHER Italian place. However, the traditional style and cute wooden booths of this caffé are enough to warrant a visit. They also have lovely outdoor seating for the summer months.
Best dish: Smoked ham, emmental cheese and sautéed mushrooms crepe.
9. Five Rivers
Five Rivers is a great choice for a delicious Friday night Indian takeaway when you just can’t be bothered to cook. It’s located south of the river so it’s also very close to most student houses and has an amazing selection of tasty Indian dishes.
Best dish: The Traditional Vegetarian Thali starter for two people is not to be missed.
10. The Emperors
There are distinctly fewer Chinese restaurants in Leamington than Indian restaurants, but The Emperors is an absolute gem. This is the perfect place for some lunchtime dim sum, or why not go all out with a fancy flat dinner?! After all, this type of extravagance is what your student loan is for.
Best dish: Chilli and Salt spare ribs and ‘Char Siu’ Cantonese Roast Pork.
Students love burgers. This is a fact. If you fancy something a bit nicer than your usual Spoons burger and a pint, then you’ve come to the right place. They also serve a very reasonable brunch on Saturdays and Sundays – perfect for post-Smack nights out.
Best dish: Smokey and the Bandit burger.
12. The Larder
Sister café of the Aviary Café, this cute place is perfectly located for students living in North Leamington. Savoury tarts, cupcakes, pastries and coffee are just some of the delicious bites on offer here.
Best dish: No two days are the same in The Larder, but the blueberry and passionfruit friands are delicious.
13. Bourbon Smokehouse
Formerly the ground floor of the club Altoria, this place has had a total refurbishment, and is now a cool venue to listen to live music, drink cocktails and eat delicious food. You can’t go here without having one of their delicious cocktails.
Best dish: Battered Jumbo Shrimps with Tomato & Jalapeño Mayo and any meat dish.
14. The Garden Shed Cafe
The Garden Shed Café is the only 100% vegan café in Warwickshire, Coventry and Birmingham. Non-meat eaters will be pleased to know that they offer a delicious full vegan breakfast and a range of homemade vegan cakes. They even have homemade vegan cheeses!
Best dish: Vegan All-Day Breakfast
15. Gusto Ricco
Finishing the list off with another Italian place, this café serves delicious coffees and paninis and is the perfect place to escape to with a friend on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
Best dish: Special Gusto Platter for Two.
