12 Ways To Make Yourself Revise When You Don’t Really Want To
Getting up and studying can be a struggle at the best of times, but even more so when the weather’s starting to improve and you can sort of see a light at the end of the academic year tunnel. Don’t worry, though; here are several ways that can help you when it comes to getting up and getting right down to business, even if you do not want to.
1. Find a quiet place.
For you to begin your task at hand, you first need to find a quiet place where you’ll get the work done without any distractions. This can be a quiet room, a library, a café, or any location that you find to be quiet.
2. Have your material ready.
Now that you have your quiet place, get all that you need for the duration of your study together. Whatever it is, from stationary to reference books or manuals, get it and put it next to you. This will ensure that you don’t move from your desk to get something, thus ending up distracting yourself. Also, this will keep you glued to your seat throughout because you won’t have any reason whatsoever to leave your desk.
3. Keep snacks and water next to you.
Snacks are the way forward when it comes to revising, and water will do a much more consistent job of keeping you alert than coffee or energy drinks will. Besides, you can’t get anything done when you’re dehydrated or hungry.
4. Wear something comfortable.
The clothes that you wear play a huge part in determining how much you can concentrate. No one feels comfortable revising in tight pieces of clothing, and no one’s going to care if you’re not dressed up for a revision sesh. Wear things that are loose and familiar, something you can easily move around in. This will ensure that you are entirely comfortable and are fully concentrated on what you are currently doing.
5. Put your phone on silent.
Just do it. We’ve all done that thing where you say you’ll ignore it if it goes off, but you won’t. You’ll see a Facebook notification pop up or someone will text you, and before you know it you’ve stopped revising and lost the will to pick it up again until tomorrow.
6. Shut down your laptop.
If the revision you need to do doesn’t actually involve using a computer or the internet, don’t sit with one open in front of you; it makes it so much easier for you to start distracting yourself. “Maybe I’ll just check my emails” or “I’ll just catch up on what’s going on in the world.” Alternatively, if you can’t avoid using a computer, try switching off the internet when you’re not using it. Writing an essay on Word doesn’t require Wi-Fi, so turn it off. It will help, honestly.
7. Set your goals for the session.
Have goals that you intend to achieve by the end of the session, and keep them achievable. How many pages do you want to have read by the end of the day? How many words would you like to have written? Which topics do you want to have nailed? Setting achievable goals will give you a clear path and will get you excited to finish the task at hand, then move on to other things.

Once you have goals, you can reward yourself whenever you reach a milestone. The reward can be something small like having a snack or taking a small walk, or you can aim higher and say you can have a night out or day off if you get X amount of revision done. This will make you motivated to get more tasks done as you know there will be a reward for you in the future. So go ahead and give yourself as many rewards as you can to motivate yourself and get things done much quicker.
9. Remind yourself why you’re doing this.
