Here’s How People At UEA Have Been Reacting To ‘Sombrero Gate’
In what is now being referred to as ‘Sombrero Gate’ a union officer’s comment has been taken by angry students and blown up all across social media and even the national news.
During the Freshers Fair a member of the Student Union asked Pedro’s, a Mexican restaurant, to stop handing out Sombreros as they could be deemed offensive. Pedro’s complied with the request but the students that witnessed the event were not impressed by the way the student union reacted.
People across the country have now taken to social media to express their opinions about whether wearing a sombrero as part of a costume or in general is racist.
Some people thought the union had gone too far.
Is it okay to wear a sombrero at UEA if you can produce a Mexican passport when prompted? http://t.co/H4ND3gh6eJ

I love UEA but I'm so embarrassed by all this press after the union banned the sombreros. Everyone I know disagrees with the SU's decision.

“As the SU, we want all members to feel safe..” http://t.co/oIPc7zuHME Yes, the straw in sombreros could give you hay fever, couldn’t it?

Some agreed that the sombreros were offensive.
Most annoying thing about the UEA sombrero ban is the amount of straight up racist stuff they allow every year in the 'pimp my barrow' event

Wearing a sombrero as a costume if you're not Mexican is racist & appropriative. Not sure why UEA is receiving so much flack for saying so

Others just thought the whole thing was funny.
loool as if the UEA has stopped students wearing the free sombreros from pedro's due to racism
— corn (@bethffs) September 28, 2015
UEA has made national news for banning Pedros sombreros lol
— Emmett Stevenson (@EmmettStevenson) September 28, 2015
And these two thought the students were the ones being ridiculous.
UEA students acting as if their uni is the first to ban sombreros, bitch please.

People at UEA please ask yourselves why the fuck you're so angry you can't have a sombrero that you'd never wear again past freshers week
